So, we’re fast approaching the year 2010,
a numerological conflagration in the offing.
Who the fuck needs grunge?
Thanks to the stretching childhood of people in the developed world, the people originally seduced by unwashed hair, flannel shirts and amorphous angst are still of prime pop culture consumption age. So it’s not even retro!
What’s going on here, then? Corporate drones having a last fling with the idea of life in a band, as middle age comes on like tank? It’d be easy to dismiss as such, especially since generally people from the walk of life Cubehead’s members come from opt for fiddling with their laptops as an avenue of musical expression.
What is going on here, then?
Rock is going on here. Henceforth, we’ll be dealing with generations that take rock music into their assisted living homes and geriatric wards. It’s just not going away. It makes sense to have band projects all through life. How seriously you take them, and consequently how seriously you’ve the right to ask the world to take them, may vary according phase of life and individual project.
There’s an economic dimension to it, too. As the corporate world no longer promises to provide graduating students with a 40-year career and a pocket watch at the bitter end, there’s really no reason to buy into any dominant social paradigm and leave your youthful enthusiasm for dead in the corporate HQ vestibule.
That’s just two reasons for grunge in 2010. There are plenty more. And, besides, if the band rocks, who needs a reason?
